The problem with 'sustainable' containers

You moved away from plastic, but something synthetic is still touching your food.

Most 'sustainable' food storage containers, glass or stainless steel, come with a plastic or silicone seal ring and lid. Cutting plastic out of your kitchen is not finished until the lid is sorted.

The food-grade problem

They say plastic and silicone need a long-term human health study to prove any harm.

Already listed as very high concern

In 2018 the European Chemicals Agency listed the silicone ring molecules D4, D5 and D6 as substances of very high concern. They persist, and they build up in wildlife.

That report may never land

No long-term human study exists, yet "food-grade" is claimed and taken to mean safe. In the meantime you are running the test in your own kitchen, at a cost nobody has worked out, and you are the one paying it.

But you don't have to wait

Take the synthetic part out of the equation. If nothing but steel touches your food, there is nothing left to prove.

Remove the unknown entirely

304 stainless steel all the way through. Even the lid.

Loopware's body and lid are both genuine 304 (18/8) stainless steel, the standard the professional restaurant industry relies on for food contact. The lid holds on by friction, steel on steel. No silicone ring, no plastic clip, no coating.

The grade is stamped into the base and the lid, and an independent lab confirmed it element by element: 18.2% chromium, 8.0% nickel.

What it replaces

One container replaces the plastic still touching your food.

Leftovers go in the fridge under a steel lid. Nothing plastic or synthetic touches your food.

Freezer bags

Freeze a batch flat in the container. Heat it in the same container, or run warm water over the base and the block slides out.

The stack of plastic tubs in the cupboard

Loopware nests just as well. The 1.0L sits inside the 1.6L, same sizes nest, and the flat lids stack. Same cupboard space, no plastic.

Verified safe for food

Boiled in acid, three times over. No harmful metals came out.

Anyone can print "food-grade" on a label. We paid an independent lab to test ours under cooking conditions, not just storage: an acidic liquid at a rolling boil for four hours, three times over.

22 metals screened

Lead, mercury and nickel included — after four hours at a rolling boil, three times over: not detected.

Genuine 304, proven

Zero taste transfer

Steel's classic worry is a metallic tang. A trained panel boiled water in it for four hours, then tasted it against pure water: nothing crossed over — no taste, no smell.

Not only for storage

Freeze in it. Cook in it. Reheat in it. Serve from it.

A storage container handles one step and hands your food to plastic or glass at every other step. This container does every step, and it is a real cooking container. Cook with Loopware has over 160 recipes written for it.

Better yet

This container pays for itself.

Buy it once and the container will keep rewarding you for the rest of its lifetime.

An electric oven heats a whole cavity of air to cook one dinner — about 1.2 kWh. The same dinner, simmered under a steel lid on the hob, uses roughly a quarter of that: about 0.30 kWh.

At today's price cap, that's about 32p in the oven against 8p on the hob — so you save around 24p a dinner. Swap five oven dinners a week and that's about £62 a year off your electricity bill, for as long as you own it.

Loopware energy saving receipt — an electric-oven dinner for two costs about 32p; the same dinner cooked on the hob in a Loopware container costs about 8p; you save about 24p a dinner, about £62 a year.

What the first buyers are saying

  • Escaping plastic and silicone — that's why most bought it. They say it lives up to it.
  • Cook in it, store in it — cottage pie, lasagne, batch meals straight to the freezer.
  • Washes properly clean — no stains, no curry smells, no gasket to trap them.
  • Used beyond the brief — an air-fryer tray, a barbecue dish, freezer to oven with no thermal shock.

Try both sizes in one go.

  • 1 × 1.0L: tonight's dinner or one freezer portion, about two servings. Nests inside the 1.6L.
  • 1 × 1.6L: the batch container, a whole curry for the week, about three servings.

Q&A

Is the lid really all steel, or steel with a plastic rim?

All steel. The lid is the same 304 stainless steel as the body and presses on by friction. There is no plastic rim, no silicone gasket and no coating — nothing but steel touches your food.

How do I know it's genuine 304 stainless steel?

The grade is stamped into the base and the lid, and an independent lab analysed the alloy element by element: 18.2% chromium, 8.0% nickel, body and lid. Many cheap containers use an unmarked or lower grade.

Is silicone actually dangerous?

The definitive answer would need a formal long-term study of how silicone's chemical and physical pathways into the human body play out, and no such study exists, so nobody can honestly give you that answer. What is on record: in 2018 the European Chemicals Agency listed the silicone ring molecules D4, D5 and D6 as substances of very high concern, because they persist and build up in wildlife. What we can say with certainty is that once you take the synthetic material out of the equation, there is nothing left to prove.

Is it safe to cook in, not just store in?

Yes. An independent lab tested it under cooking conditions: an acidic test liquid at a rolling boil for four hours, three times over, with 22 metals screened, including lead, mercury and nickel — none detected. Add oil or liquid where a recipe needs it, start on a low heat, and never heat the container empty.

Can it go from the freezer straight onto the hob?

Yes. Steel takes the jump from frozen to heat without cracking, which glass can't. Loosen the lid while it's cold, start on a low heat and bring the food right up to piping hot, stirring now and then.

Is the lid airtight or leakproof?

No. The steel lid is friction-fit for flat home storage, not a watertight seal. Dry food travels fine; keep liquids upright and level, and don't carry loose liquids in a bag.

Can I use it in a microwave?

No. It's stainless steel, and metal can't go in a microwave. Reheat on the hob or in the oven instead, or tip the food into a microwave-safe bowl as you normally would.

Can Loopware be used on a gas hob?

Yes. We've tested Loopware on a gas hob using a heat diffuser (also called a simmer plate), placed between the flame and the container. It worked very well, giving gentler, more even heat while greatly reducing direct-flame discolouration. Please check that your hob manufacturer permits the use of a heat diffuser, use low to medium heat, and never heat the container empty.

Will shops fill my own container?

Many butchers, fishmongers and deli counters are happy to fill a clean container you bring — just ask. Supermarket policies vary. The container wipes and washes clean, so it's always ready for the counter.

Isn't steel heavy to carry?

No. The 1.0L weighs about 237 g with its lid and the 1.6L about 309 g — both lighter than a glass container of the same size.

What's in the Starter Set, and how fast is delivery?
